From Millennial Camel Bells to Transcontinental Freight Trains: Understanding the Past and Present of the Khorgos Port

In Mongolian, "Khorgos" means "a place where camel caravans pass"; in Kazakh, it signifies a place where wealth converges. Situated at the western end of the Ili River Valley and sharing a landscape with Kazakhstan, this border port embodies a commercial history spanning a millennium. From the beacon towers of the Sui and Tang dynasties' Silk Road and the succession of six generations of border gates to the modern-day roar of China-Europe freight trains heading west, the story of Khorgos is a microcosm of China's westward opening-up and development.

I. The Past: Unceasing Camel Bells and a Millennial Silk Road Waystation

As early as the Sui and Tang dynasties, Khorgos served as a key waystation on the Northern Route of the Silk Road. Caravans, monks, and envoys crossing the Tianshan Mountains would stop here to change horses and stock up on provisions; the sound of camel bells echoed across the Gobi Desert day and night. With its lush pastures and abundant water, the valley was a natural resting point for those traveling west. Beacon towers stood guard along the border, protecting the merchants and travelers passing throughearning it the reputation of a "millennial waystation."

Over the centuries, trade fluctuated, yet the port's strategic location as a vital gateway remained constant. In 1881, following the signing of the Treaty of Saint Petersburg (Treaty of Ili) between China and Russia, Nikan Kalunlocated along the Khorgos Riverwas officially upgraded to an authorized trading port. This marked the beginning of modern cross-border trade, establishing the site as a core overland trade corridor between late Qing China and Russia. During the Republic of China era, the port underwent several cycles of closure and reopening; trade goods consisted primarily of furs, tea, and silk, with simple checkpoints on the Gobi facilitating these early cross-border commercial exchanges.

In the early days of the People's Republic of China, the first "national gate"built of red brick and topped with a prominent red starwas completed, serving as the western gateway for Sino-Soviet trade. Later, due to the changing times, trade at the port declined and eventually fell silent, with the Gobi returning to tranquility. Over the course of a millennium, this place has witnessed the prosperity of the Silk Road and endured periods of isolation and silence, quietly awaiting a new wave of opening-up.

II. The Present: Six Generations of Border Gates and the Reshaping of the Asia-Europe "Golden Corridor"

In 1983, the State Council approved the resumption of customs clearance at the Khorgos port; this "Western Gateway," dormant for years, swung open once more, breathing new life into a century-old port. Over four decades of development, six successive generations of border gates have stood tall, with each renovation marking a significant leap forward in opening-up.

The second-generation gate saw expanded clearance channels, the rise of border trade, an influx of inland merchants, and a booming barter trade. The fourth and fifth generations brought widened freight channels and electronic clearance systems, driving freight volume from the million-ton to the ten-million-ton level. In 2018, the magnificent sixth-generation gate was completed, and the "Double West" Highway (connecting Western China to Western Europe) opened fully; with parallel highway and railway routes, the major overland artery between Asia and Europe was finally fully unblocked.

In 2012, the Khorgos railway port opened, initiating regular westbound China-Europe freight train services. That same year, the worlds first cross-border free trade zonethe China-Kazakhstan International Border Cooperation Centerbegan operations under a "within-territory-but-outside-customs" policy, allowing visa-free access and free trade for merchants from both nations. Khorgos has evolved from a simple highway port into a comprehensive hub integrating highways, railways, pipelines, fiber-optic cables, air transport, and postal services. It has transformed from a desolate Gobi wasteland into an open economic powerhouse, combining the roles of Khorgos City, a national-level economic development zone, a comprehensive bonded zone, and a pilot free trade zone.

Todays Khorgos is a far cry from the rudimentary checkpoint of the past. China-Europe freight trains shuttle day and night, reaching over 200 cities across 24 European countries. A steady stream of cross-border trucks transports machinery, new energy vehicles, consumer goods, and fresh produce westward. Smart customs systems have been implemented, slashing export clearance times by 80% and significantly reducing logistics costs for enterprises. This corridor links the vast domestic market with billions of consumers across Central Asia and Europe; a journey that takes 45 days by sea can now be completed overland in under ten days, establishing it as the most economical and efficient "golden corridor" of the New Eurasian Land Bridge.

III. Spanning a Millennium: The Answer of the Times Behind the Port

A thousand years ago, camel caravans laden with silk and tea journeyed to the Western Regions; decades ago, border residents carried small commodities to trade with one another; today, China-Europe freight trains, fully loaded with "Made in China" goods, speed toward destinations across the globe.

The transformation of Khorgos reveals three enduring characteristics:

1. A uniquely advantageous location:Situated at the natural gateway of the Northern Tianshan Route, it connects the Chinese hinterland in the east with the five Central Asian nations in the west. As China's closest land port to Europe, it possesses inherent advantages for cross-border trade.

2. A foundation of deepening openness: From sporadic grassroots trade to a state-designated Class-I port bolstered by policies for cross-border free trade zones and pilot free trade zones, the continuous release of national dividends for westward opening-up has unleashed the port's dynamic vitality.

3. A spirit of mutually beneficial trade:For a millennium, this place has been a hub for the exchange of goods and the blending of cultures. Chinese electromechanical products, vehicles, and agricultural goods head abroad, while energy resources and specialty products from Central Asia enter the domestic market; trade and cultural exchanges between China and Kazakhstan are growing ever closer.

From beacon towers and courier stations to smart ports, and from individual camel caravans to massive freight trains, six generations of border gates have stood silently, witnessing the monumental changes in the landscape. The Gobi Desert is no longer barren, and the Silk Road has regained its vitality; with a brand-new outlook, Khorgos continues to write a new chapter in the joint construction of the "Belt and Road Initiative."
